Caring for your Purchase
How to take care of your Jewellery
Let's all admit it, we don't often take care of our jewellery like we should. If we do though, our beautiful items will last forever, enabling us to give our more expensive, precious items to our loved ones as items of memorabilia. With some simple, basic care, you can help preserve and protect your jewellery for years to come.
To prolong the beauty of your jewellery are some ideas and reminders for taking care of your jewellery:
- It’s always wise to remove your jewellery before:
- Sleeping - sleeping in jewellery is one of the major causes of damage
- Playing sports or exercising at the gym
- Cleaning the house or using harsh chemicals
- Putting on lotion, perfume, hairspray, shaving cream and other beauty products – cosmetics, hairspray, perfumes and lotions can contain chemicals that can often damage jewellery
- Doing laundry
- Swimming in the pool – the chlorine in pools and spas can react with jewellery metals causing colour changes and even structural damage
- Bathing – remove all jewellery before showering or cleaning. Soap can cause a film, making it appear dull and dirty
- Experiencing extreme cold or heat
How often should I have my jewellery cleaned?
Caring for jewellery is important. If you take care of your jewellery as listed above, you should not have to take them in to professionals too often. Tarnished sterling silver can easily be cleaned at home. Read how to clean your sterling silver jewellery on our blog - Click Here. (More blogs will be added soon on how to clean pearls, gold jewellery, costume jewellery, gemstones, plated and metal jewellery). Professional cleanings are recommended as often as once a year to every two years depending on what type of jewellery you have and how tarnished it is. Between professional servicing, most gold and platinum jewellery can be maintained with a non-abrasive cleaner. Examine your jewellery regularly to make sure settings are snug; and clasps and joinings are secure. Sterling silver tarnishes rapidly, especially when exposed to salt air and products containing sulphur, such as rubber bands and some types of paper. We recommend a non-abrasive silver polishing cloth, available here online, to keep your silver looking its best.
How should I store my jewellery?
Jewellery storage is also important. At the time of purchase, all oLuxo jewellery is wrapped in a protective box, gift-packed or tarnish-resistant pouch. When not wearing your jewellery, we recommend that you place the piece back in its original case or another suitably lined box or pouch, especially necklaces and chains which may kink if not stored correctly.
How do I care for gemstones and diamonds?
Dust, pollution and daily wear all conspire to cloud the brilliance of a diamond and dull the surface of platinum and gold. Some gemstones require special care, but certain basic precautions apply to all jewellery set with gemstones. Avoid excessive impact against hard surfaces, extreme temperature changes and contact with perfumes, cosmetics and household chemicals. Prong settings are particularly vulnerable and should be examined regularly to be sure they hold the stone securely. Jewellery set with gemstones can be maintained with a non-abrasive jewellery cleaner. Ultrasonic cleaning is not safe for many gemstones, so we advise against this method. To clean Diamonds & Gemstones: use a mild solution of 6 parts warm water to 1 part cloudy ammonia, 1 part dish washing liquid and apply with a very soft bristle brush.
How do I care for cultured pearls?
Fine cultured pearls with thick nacre layers will last for generations if cared for properly. Cultured pearls should be kept free of perfumes, cosmetics, perspiration and dirt. You may gently wipe cultured pearls with a slightly damp cloth. Some cultured pearls are strung on pure silk with knots between each cultured pearl. Over time, the silk will stretch, weaken and become soiled. If you wear your cultured pearls regularly, we encourage you to have your cultured pearls cleaned and restrung annually.
